Ryan Ready For Country Calling

Thursday, June 4, 2026

An annual encounter highlighting community rugby league talent from across the state will hold extra significance this year, when it’s contested on Queensland Day. Mendi Blackhawks squad member Ryan Kinsey can’t wait to run out for Queensland Country against City and the forward feels he can step up his game in a match made for fringe Hostplus cup players to springboard their selection at their respective clubs.

“This is the highest level I’ve played at. I’m expecting and looking forward to a fast paced game and the heavy collisions.”

Kinsey’s confidence has grown throughout 2026. The prop’s pushed himself through tough training sessions, surpassing perceived physical barriers along the way. He’s also improved intricacies around his role as a front rower.

“I think training with the Hostplus Cup squad has benefited me, and I’m approaching my local league performances with more conviction. I’m fitter, healthier and I’m also learning a lot more about the little parts of my game.”

The Centrals Tiger secured selection in the Country side through a strong showing in last month’s Foley Shield, albeit after what was a sluggish first up display by his own standards.

“I think I started off a little slow in the first match, but found my feet in the second game after starting in it, and picking up my work rate from the opener.”

Fellow Townsville player and former Mendi Blackhawk Curtis Dempsey earned another Country call-up, which has provided a comforting connection for first timer Kinsey.

“It will be good to be going down with him. Curty and I have played a lot of football together. We played juniors together from under 10s till under 17s so going away to play Foley Shield together for the first time in a while was great, and I’m looking forward to reuniting this weekend.

The Country side will assemble in camp on the Sunshine Coast on Friday.
