Local League Duo Determined To Crack Cup

The Mendi Blackhawks opening trial presents a chance for Tajshon Messa-Santo to once again hit the field for the Mendi Blackhawks.

“I’ve played here for Hastings Deering Colts and Mal Meninga Cup so yeah I’ve always loved putting on this jersey.”

His consistent performances with Souths in the local league last year, saw him called into train with Townsville midway through its Hostplus Cup Campaign. He was then offered a train and trial opportunity leading into this season, which the 21 year old turned into a 2026 contract.

“I was pretty stoked! It just goes to show that the work that I put in through the pre-season really paid off. But not only was I happy for myself I was happy for all of us boys in that same position that were signed.”

Local product Ryan Kinsey is another RLTD trialist turned squad member.

“It’s pretty cool, I obviously watched the team a bit when I was growing up as a kid, always wanted to play for them.”

His breakthrough may have come in his mid-twenties but there’s still plenty left in the tank, to give at the next level.

“Yeah I guess it’s been a bit of a slog. Played juniors at Redbacks which is now Souths from about under 10s to 16s, then went to Centrals and played there for a few years, and then went out to Charters Towers for four years and played A grade there. Then last year came back to Centrals and yeah and then must have been playing alright football to get noticed.”

Ryan’s a rangy proud prop…

“Yeah I’m front rower, so that’s where I like to play, it’s the best position on the field.”

Tajshon’s a versatile back rower who prides himself on his efforts out of possession.

“I get chucked in the middle a bit but I prefer to play out on an edge. But yeah I want to be known for my defence. So if I can get that right then I guess that attacking stuff will kind of flow off that.”

Both forwards will be keen to impress against the Cowboys Young Guns at Jack Manski Oval on Saturday as they try to take another step towards their shared ambition, of earning a Queensland Cup debut this year. The clash kicks off at 7pm, completing a five fixture feast of footy action on Valentines Day, with the Mendi Blackhawks junior sides starting respective seasons, against the Sunshine Coast Falcons.
