The “Sky’s The Limit” program launched in 2018 by the Mendi Townsville & Districts Blackhawks in collaboration with the Queensland Police Service, is a community initiative aimed at supporting year 4 students in Townsville and surrounding areas. Designed to provide positive mentoring, the program fosters a supportive environment that enhances school attendance and engagement.
Through interactive activities featured in the programs customised booklet, students engage in lessons that promote resilience, emotional regulation, and healthy lifestyle choices. The program incorporates sport-based written activities and physical exercises, such as touch and basketball, to reinforce these values. Additionally, it emphasises the importance of healthy eating and cultural awareness, aiming to reduce bullying and aggressive behaviours.
The program initially piloted at Rasmussen State School, and has now expanded to Weir State School, Vincent State School and Carinity Education Shalom. Students participating in the program have demonstrated improved attendance rates, better attitudes toward school work and enhanced interactions with peers and teachers.
When speaking with James Tamou on the current success of the program he stated “it is really pleasing to hear that the feedback I have received from all schools is the behaviour adjustments the students have shown. This emulates the principles in which we teach within the Sky’s the Limit program. It’s the highlight of my day, attending these schools and seeing the students, I get more out of it than what the students get, with the bonds and relationships made between myself and the students.”
The “Sky’s the Limit” program exemplifies a successful collaboration between sports organisations, law enforcement and educational institutions, working together to inspire young minds and build stronger communities.
