Juniors Round 4 Recap
Monday, March 10, 2025

A trip up north saw the Mendi Blackhawks Junior teams take on Northern Pride on the weekend just gone.
Here is what our 4 coaches had to say regarding their teams performances against Pride.
“Yet another tough day on the field for the girls, with the weather being very steamy after a bit of rain and a number of girls carrying injuries we just could not hold it together. We went down 26-6 with Evoltia Tuala scoring our only try. We ended up with 1 left on the bench with losing 3 players in the first half which we had to play on with people out of position. The girls tried their best but couldn’t keep up with a powerful Pride team.” 17 girls Coach Rebecca Petersen said.
Nathan Norford, Coach of Cyril Connell Cup team said “Very hot but dry track to play some quality footy. It was good to see some combinations starting to grow. We played some outstanding footy at times but our challenge will be our consistency, maintaining that for longer periods throughout the game. Pride never gave up grinded their way back into the lead in the final 10 minutes. A match winning play from Trent Martin, burst through the line on a yardage carry to run 60 metres to put our team in front 20 to 16.”
Gavin Lloyd, Harvey Norman 19 girls coach said, “A very different game with unlimited interchange but the girls dug deep after being behind for most of the game. The girls made a comeback in the second half and took the lead with 4 minutes to go. Unfortunately the Pride scored in the corner in the last minute to take the win by 2 points.”
Annan Whittington, Coach of Mal Meninga Cup said “Our young men showed incredible resilience and grit in hot and humid conditions to grind their way to a patient win, over the Northern Pride who were topped up with 6-8 Young Guns, including two NRL top squad members”
“I really feel like the belief and trust in playing patient footy was finally on display and we need to use this win to launch our season. As a group we are really looking forward to getting back home this week and testing ourselves against the Top of the Table Mackay Cutters.”
All our Junior teams as well as our Hostplus Cup team are at home this weekend against Mackay Cutters in what will be another tough weekend of footy.
