And so the list of South Sydney Rabbitohs EDDP Players grows with a second signing from the Mendi Blackhawks Cyril Connell Cup team: Kris Sagato.

The 16 year old Kirwan SHS student will head down to Sydney this weekend with Blackhawks team mate Malakai Martin to play in the U16 trial match against Cronulla Sharks. The pair will get a good taste of what it is like wearing the green, red and white for the first time as a Rabbitoh.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to represent my family. Dad was a bit shocked when he first found out about it, I am doing this for my family so it’s exciting to represent my family as well” – Kris said

“I am from NZ and originally played Rugby Union, then I seen a video of Rugby League and asked dad if I could play league and tried it out and thought this game was more aggressive and I like being aggressive in my game so I thought I should switch to that sport”

I have heap of learning I need to do. I will play with Blackhawks in 2026, I was going to move to Sydney and play there but I chose to stay here and play for Blackhawks and see how I go.

I think its good for him (Malakai Martin) because he’s young and it’s good because he’s only year 9 so it will be tough for him but he has the skill so its good for him.” Kris said.

“Yeah its a bit of deja vu, we have had Kris pencilled in for a bit now so its good to get it signed. He is another stand out in the Blackhawks and I am glad he is being recognised and will get the same opportunity.” Jaelen said.

“For us that’s the big focus and that is the plan all along to instil some inspiration and let the young kids know this is real and that this partnership is real between souths so there is a chance for them. I’m sure every kid here wants to play in the NRL for either Cowboys or Souths so it is great to give these kids the opportunity to do that”

We are extremely proud of Kris and wish both him and Malakai all the best in the trial match this weekend.
