Following the news that Jahrome Hughes has signed with the Melbourne Storm for 2017 comes the news that another Townsville & Districts Mendi Blackhawks star is heading for the NRL.

Hulking centre Moses Pangai has announced his signing with the Brisbane Broncos from 2017. Pangai will join younger brother Tevita under the watchful eye of master coach Wayne Bennett in Brisbane next season.

Pangai is no stranger to NRL systems, having made his National Youth Competition (NYC) debut as a 16-year-old with the West Tigers before moving on to the North Queensland Cowboys. He also spent time at the Penrith Panthers and Canberra Raiders before returning to Townsville to reunite with former coach Kristian Woolf.

Having made his sole NRL appearance back in 2012 for the Cowboys, the outside back will be looking to secure a more regular spot in the Broncos first grade side with this new opportunity.

Pangai has had an outstanding two years at the Mendi Blackhawks scoring 23 tries and having a hand in countless more during his 31 games. The 24-year-old has the size, speed and game sense that will serve him well in the step up to the NRL.

There is no one more qualified to recognise the potential Pangai has than current Mendi Blackhawks Coach Kristian Woolf. Woolf has known Pangai since his NYC days when the young player lived with NYC Coach Woolf and his family.

Woolf has also coached Pangai at a National Level for the Tongan rugby league side.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for Moses that I believe he is ready to take with two hands. He has thoroughly deserved this opportunity through his dominant performances at Intrust Super Cup level over the past two years.” Woolf said.

“I certainly believe he is the best centre in our competition and has the skill set to make an impact at NRL level.”

“As a club, we are very proud to have played a part in providing a strong system and club culture to help Moses play the footy that has earned him this contract, and I am confident there will be other players who earn the same opportunities.”

“We wish Moses every success next year, and thoroughly look forward to seeing him finish his time here playing the footy he is capable of.”
