Blackhawks set to soar in 2015

Thursday, September 11, 2014

The Army may have marked the end of the 25 year S-70A-9 Black Hawk operation in Townsville with a flyover on the 18th August 2014, but an emerging Rugby League Club set to enter the Intrust Super Cup in 2015 intend to keep the name and theme Black Hawk alive in the hearts and minds of North Queenslanders.

The Townsville and Districts Mendi Blackhawks will enter Queensland’s premier Rugby League competition, The Intrust Super Cup next season. This exciting development for the sport of rugby league and the North Queensland region has been three years in the making. The addition of the Townsville and Districts Mendi Blackhawks to the Intrust Super Cup will provide for the continued expansion of the game in the region and also give our home-grown talent a reason to stay and play.

The name Blackhawks was chosen in a 2012 “name the team” competition by Townsville resident and local fire-fighter Matthew Cocker. Matthew explains his choice “to witness the stunning army aircrafts fly overhead; it’s a constant reminder that they are protecting us always. It’s the name of a vehicle that not only helped Townsville residents when they were in trouble but also residents in nearby areas. You only have to look at how the Blackhawks assisted through the flood process to see that.”

As they prepare to enter the 2015 Intrust Super Cup competition the Blackhawks are thrilled to announce a landmark three-year naming rights sponsorship deal with The Mendi Group. Mendi is an organisation that has, over the past half a century; been a leading civil construction company, building the foundations and infrastructure to many of our community hubs in the region. The team will be known as the Townsville and Districts Mendi Blackhawks.
